Do you recognize this photograph? It was taken during the 1921 Tulsa Race
Riot. It is the subject of my newest series which I hope to have completed by
the end of 2009. Please let me know if you have any interesting thoughts on
this atrocity.

During the 2nd and 3rd quarters the 8th grade has been studying
past and present societal injustices or human rights violations.  This
began with a study of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
which was a document created after WWII. This document was
meant to act as a guideline for countries to help them avoid a repeat
of the Holocaust.
After studying the document, students went on to research a past
societal injustice. They were given a choice between the Holocaust,
the Genocide in Rawanda, the Jim Crow Era of discrimination and
lynchings in the United States, The Trail of Tears, or Kosovo. After
studying their topic, students created a case study on their topic or
on a facet of their topic.
Also, students were connecting what they studied in this class with
their art class. In the bay window are several examples of art
studies that students did, based on the work of Eric Humphries. Eric
Humphries uses symbolism and cartoons to evoke responses
around topics related to Human Rights violations.
Our culminating project was the displays for the museum of social
injustice. For the displays students researched a current day human
rights violation, such as, child soldiers, child labor, forced marriage,
gender discrimination. After researching the broad category
students focused in on one particular facet of their category and
created a case study. Some students study actual people who had
their human rights violated others studied countries where that
category of human rights violation was prevalent.
The International School of Port of Spain
Some time ago I received an e-mail from an 8th grade art teacher named
Gina Sicotte. Ms. Sicotte teaches at The International School of Port of Spain
in Trinidad and wanted my permission to use images of my paintings to
inspire her students to do their own artworks of a conscious type. Of course I
said yes. Here is an outline of the instructions given to the class and below
you can see their finished products. I personally think they all did a great job
and am very honored to have been included in the project.
